Salam Alaikum

The phrase As-salamu alaykum is a greeting in Arabic that means "Peace be upon you."  Salam Alaikum is also a picture book based on the popular song (with the same title) by Harris J.

It has been an unprecedented school year with difficult waters to navigate.  The Ursa Major room family is thankful to have the support of friends and family during this challenging time.

We wish you peace.

Our PBL: Building Bridges with Books

Our class enjoys books.  More importantly, we enjoy sharing our love of books with others. This might be because of our beloved friend, Mr. Lou (check out his post here).  When COVID hit, we were no longer able to share reading time with the lower school students due to restrictions.  Or so we thought!

For our PBL, the students decided to use web conferencing platforms, like Zoom and Google Meets, to continue sharing stories with others.  Their love of reading extended to the greater community, too.  They even had opportunities to share with local senior centers.  They named their project, "Building Bridges with Books." Click on the image below to view their website.  (Yes, the students created the website, too.)

Etiquette Dinner Scavenger Hunt

Good Morning, All!

Today we will be researching proper dinner etiquette.  We will cover proper table setting, food service, and table manners.  Using the link provided below, please research your group's assigned topic.  We will share our findings afterwards.

When you are finished, please take time to practice "setting a place" at the table. Here is an image to help you with the setup.

First Great Lesson

Listen to the First Great Lesson being beautifully told.

Practical Life Videos

Here are some videos to help with the new material on the practical life shelf.

Stick weaving is an art that is thought to have been brought to Europe by the Crusaders.  This art form was used by Early Americans settlers. It is both easy and fun to do!

Marlinspike is the art of knot tying.  It is a craft used by sailors, fishermen, and boaters alike.  These individuals use the knots to tie boats up to piers, tow cargo, and/or bait hooks.  Tying knots and working with rope, called a line, requires skill learned over time and with much practice.  Many practice blindfolded in order to improve and perfect their knot-tying skills as it is essential to a boater's safety.

For additional practice, check out this website with an index of knots and animations as to how to tie them.
